Who is Roger Vivier? And what does he have to do with Jinni, Freemasons and Clara Bow’s adventure?
Simply put, Clara is a lady of a certain generation and when author Michael Dale wanted to give Clara special pair of shoes he did some research and came across Roger Vivier.
In short Roger Vivier was a French fashion designer credited with the design of the first stiletto heel in 1954. He considered his shoes to be sculptures, often decorating them with extravagant flourishes. His label survives to this day, fourteen years after his death.
The aim was to show what kind of person George, Clara’s husband was, and what better way than to have him give Clara a magnificent pair of extremely expensive Roger Vivier high heels? The actual pair described in the book are now priceless museum pieces, perhaps one of the pairs shown in the V&A museum in their The Golden Age of Couture exhibition in 2008. If you’ve read the book, did you spot one that looked familiar?
Michael says “the aim when doing research is to create authenticity. I am not an expert on ladies fashion, but I am writing about a woman, who in the 30’s and 40’s had a wealthy husband. I needed to know what was fashionable at the time, what was excessive. I also thought it would be fun to have Clara find these priceless artefacts hidden in a box under bed, with no clue as to their value.”
